Lee - if you are able to get to a local Library in Manchester, you could perhaps see if they have the Kelly's Directory for 1900, 1901, etc (this was a sort of forerunner of Thomson/Yellow Pages Directories) but was usually street by street - however, at the rear of the Directory is an index of the surnames contained within the Directory and you might find Chamberlain listed there. I looked in my local Library on Saturday for someone and was amazed at the amount of info. contained in these old Directories. It also included some individuals (not necessarily in business) living in private addresses, so it's always a good place to look if you have an opportunity. Leicester University have a site of some directories on line, but cannot remember the address - if you seach for University of Leicester Old Directories I am sure you will find the site, and perhaps (fingers crossed) you might be lucky an find they have a Manchester Directory. Good luck Jacqui

Lee, have you tried tracing them on the 1901 census, it gives the address as well. Failing that or if this is too early for them someone may have an old business/trade directory probably need at least the area though. Regards Penny

Can anybody assist ? I have vague info that my grandparents ran /owned a Fish & Chip shop in Manchester in the early 1900s. Apparently with Chamberlains......in the title. How can I check this if it was so - would there be a deeds office or something like that where I could get additional info or names . Lee
