My GtNan was christened Nellie, so a name in its own right too.

Just to confuse you, my great aunt Nell was actually named Alice. Then she met her husband, Len. She was thereafter known as Nell as they were llke 'two peas in a pod'. Cute isn't it?

One theory I heard is that the 'N' was added because people used to say 'mine (or 'my') Ellen or 'mine Edward'. People became lazy, and it was eventually shortened to 'Nellie', 'Ned' etc. Over time, these became 'real' names rather than nicknames.

Jackie I think it is possible that they would call one child Ellen and another Nellie. On the basis that they call children the same name as the Mother or the Father or that they give new children the EXACT same name as one that has died - anything is possible. They didn't seem to worry about it being confused with everyone having the same name. I was also chasing the proper name for Nellie - and mine turned out to be "Nellie" - not a nickname!! Typical or what? Good luck. I hope you manage to work it out in the end. Just keep your options open and don't discount anything until you have good proof!!
