I am trying to locate my grandfathers grave. He was buried at Datchworth church (hertford) in 1959. I know that if you are buried in a council cemetary that you can get the grave number from the council but how would I go about getting this information for someone buried in a churchyard? Any advice gratefully received!!

hi sarah, not sure if this is right but you could try contacting the vicar at the church concerned maybe they would be able to help you with your enquiry or be able to put you in touch with someone who can.just a thought kaz

Sarah It may be worth getting in touch with the Records Office for that area. They may be able to advise you. In Hull, where I live, the records for burials and cremations are held at the Hull crematorium offices. If your relative has been buried then you can search the records for the grave number. If it is a particularly large cemetery they will arrange for someone to meet you there and show you where it is. Particularly useful if there is no headstone. If they have been cremated they will give you a map to locate where your relatives ashes were scattered. I'd be particularly interested in any information you receive as I also have ancestors buried in Hertfordshire. Jeanette

Sarah, Are you referring to Datchworth All Saints C of E Church in Datchworth? If so you can find contact details for the Church by visiting www(.)hertsdirect(.)org and doing a search for Datchworth Church. I know this church well as I live near it, it is a small church with a quite a small lovely churchyard. Good luck with your research, Another Sarah :)

Dear All, Thanks for all your helpful advice. I got the church contact details from Herts Council as suggested & emailed the vicar. He replied immediately and although he has now retired he gave me the phone number of the church warden. I rang the warden & he has offered to search the old records for me & try to locate the grave. What a lot of very, very helpful people! Thanks again, Sarah.
