Gen - thanks for that website. I found my George born in Evercreech by looking at the parish records. I said I had finished with them at the LDS then realised I needed other info so have had to re order them. Moral of this- make sure you have everything you can get before letting go of the source ! Hi all, Sorry for the delay in replying- karate night for my two boys so I've only just got back on the boards!! Thank you for the thoughts it has backed up my own but you never know if you are are relying on hope that they are the right connection or that your common sense has won. The census errors I can cope with it was mainly the parish records that threw me Rowles to Roles may not be such a big jump but it is actually two separate surnames-so the question was am I looking at a spelling mistake in a time when the majority of people could not read and write let alone spell or am I in a totally different family??!!!!!!! I think I am on the right track and your advice has really reassured me. Many thanks, Sinead:))))

Sinead It must be something in the water in Evercreech. I was hunting for ages for my great grandmother & her father. Her name was given as Raikes. When I found her father's death certificate his name was Raikes alias Reakes. I have ordered the parish records from the LDS for Evercreech so if I can look for anything for you, just let me know. Pat Frome, Somerset.

It is very common for dates of birth to vary from census to census to certificates, and for the spelling of names to go here, there and everywhere. Also for names to vary from first name to middle name and back again. I think they did it purposely to confuse us. From what you have said, I think you have very good reason to feel fairly confident that you have found the right one. Just keep that modicum of doubt in your mind, and keep looking for confirmatin. Jan.

Hi all, I have a bit of a headache with a George Roles and would appreciate some impartial advice!! As father on an 1847 birth cert. I have a George Roles in Somerset in Martock. From the 1841 census I have him and family living in Martock mis-spelled as Rose and have a birth year of 1810 but no place of origin. From the 1851 census I have him again this time name again mis-spelled as Rowe with a birth date of 1808 from Evercreech,Somerset. Parish records so far indicate a George Rowles born in 1806 in Evercreech. On the birth certificate I have of him and descendants concluding with my mother the name is Roles. Could this Evercreech chap be the right one or am I barking up entirely the wrong tree?! I would really love people's advice as I have quite successfully tied myself up in the biggest knot ever!!! Many thanks,Sinead
