I discovered one of my ancestors had been "adopted" in the 1880's. Whwn I looked idly at the 1881 census I discovered that the couple next door were his real parents and, having found his birth record on 1837, have sent off for his birth certificate to confirm it.

Thanks Amanda, I suppose I am wondering if it is possible to get an original birth certificate based on the place and date of birth. What sort of documentation would this person have needed to emigrate to the US. Would she have a new birth certificate with her new name. What information would there be on any naturalization documents. How would I find a marriage certificate in the US. Any help or clues appreciated. Cathy

Please can someone tell me if it is possible to trace birth parents of someone who was born in 1900. I don't know what they were named at birth but I do have the exact date of birth from a US Social Security application. I have found them on 1901 UK census but with their new name. The person was born in Manchester UK but emigrated with her adoptive family to the US. I know this is a long shot. Thanks Cathy.
