If it was a surname used as a first name the I would have thought that it would be rarer than it is? But thanks anyway Helen - you re right about Angus (if Thrift McKay is that Thrift Key/Keay) Best Wishes, -Kat

Could it be a surname that has been used as a first name? Perhaps his mother or grandmother's maiden name was Thrift. If you look on IGI for that surname in Scotland it was quite common in Angus which I believe is where your relly was from.

Thank you! I know about the plant/money connections, I just wondered how it came to be used as name. My ancestor was male, but I seen it used as a female middle name. Best Wishes, -Kat

Without looking it up, my lickle brain tells me the word 'thrifty' means to be cautious with, for example, money or food - not mean, just not wasteful Thrift is also a rather lovely plant. The Sea Thrift is a plant with a clump of leaves at the base of the tall stem, which has lovely pink flowers on top.

I have been trying to find out the origin and meaning of the very uncommon first name 'Thrift' but cannot seem to find any info on it. My 'Thrift' ancestor was Thrift McKay (possibly Key/Keay). Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, -Kat (by the way, there are only 44 'Thrift' names on ancestry's VRI and only 3 on FreeBMD!)
