Is there anyway I can find out when my grandfather, Alfred, changed his surname from Bump/Bumb to Boom? His father was German and I reckon my granddad(born in England) decided to make the change when he married in 1873 but cannot be certain.....are there any registers that I can look at??? Thank you, Aileen

Hi Aileen At Kew Public Record Office there is a section on the top floor of reference volumes, of people who have changed their name by deed poll, not sure how far back it goes. It is worth going on their website to see what they have. Also, you didn't have to do the name change officially- many people just called themselves what they wanted!! Sue
