How can you trace back further than 1881 if you dont have an address only London. Thanks Marie

Don't know if it will help but I am looking for a birth and a marriage to find an address in 1871 so that I can then look for the family in the census. Mel

You unfortunately have to go the route of trawling through BMD's to find certificates, which give you more names, addresses etc. If they had a profession, some records are available. Also to work back via parish records from the last parish you know for sure. Contact the Family History Society for your area of London. The Society of Genealogists publishes a useful little book "My ancestors were Londoners" by Cliff Webb - £3.95 - look at their website. Hope this helps a bit - its hard I know, especially with 'common' names, but keep at it!! Maz. XX
