Hi we are still compiling from what we already know and my husband wants to start looking in the"Public Records Office" - which is the cheapest way to do this? We hope to do as much as poss on-line from here in NZ and do more when we visit UK next year. Thanks Doreen

Hi Not quite sure what you are asking but if you go to the PRO site (www.pro.gov.uk), you will be able to access the catalogue of their holdings. From that you will be able to find what is available on line and what you need to look up when you get there. It has so much information that you will need to be quite specific about what you want and going armed with a list and ready reference numbers will help. You can order things in advance so that they are ready for yo when you arrive - all the details you need including help leaflets are available on the website. Sylvie

There are some PRO items on film and fiche available at LDS centres, if there is one near you. They usually have the birth marriage and death indices for England and Wales, and some also have Ireland. If you have a LDS centre locally, go along and ask for a printout of their holdings.

Doreen The PRO at Kew (recently renamed The National Archives) is a really huge place and they ask you to "do the tour" before they let you loose. For a one day visit, it is almost too much to take in so advance preparation is good advice. I go there to look at Merchant Marine and WW1 records...the surviving records for non officers are very patchy....lots have been destroyed by fire. The full Birth Marriage and Death Index for England and Wales is there, as is the Fiche version of the 1901 census but if you are interested in other years, you have to go to the FRC in Islington,London. It might be a good idea to list on this board what you want to look for just before you come..I'm sure you will receive some good tips. Sue Surrey
