Does anyone know anything about this please? I have a marriage reg of a couple married at home "after publication of the forms according to the Free Church" There are only 2 witnesses and I assume that one of them was the minister (a John A Stewart). My query is how can I find a BIRTH cert for the groom. I know he was born March 1851 in Aberdeen according to his army discharge papers but can find no trace of him. The 1861 census isn't much good either. Francis Townsend parents Robert and Mary Ann Townsend. regards, Sylvia

Hi Sylvia, You will not find a birth certificate for him at statutory records only started in 1855 in Scotland. You would have to try and find him on parish registers. I do have the Scottish census for 1881 if you need a look up. Do you have his death certificate? You should find it on scotlandspeople.gov.uk. It's pay to view but well worth the money. Good luck in your search Regards Margaret
