Have you checked on 1837online? I don't know what year you are interested in, but the later records show the surname of the spouse too.

Sorry if I am telling you something you already know, but when you are interested in a marriage on Free BMD you need to click on the Page Number and it will show you all the names that have been entered for that exact vol/page reference. If you are lucky you will see 2 or 4 names - half male, half female - and will recognise the surname or christian name of the missing spouse. Hope this makes sense! Maz. XX

It may be that the page no is unreadable, this has happened with one of my relatives. Look on the free bmd page it tells you how you can tell if the no was unable to be transcribed properly it could have a dash _ where the no. is unrecogniseable or a question mark have a look on 1837 to cross reference.Unfortunately in my case the records office cant find a cert and the ref is unreadable in all the records(on the fiche as well!)

If you have the husbands name, then you could send for a cert and put a 'checking point' of his name. This means that they will only send the cert if it matches. If not you will get half the money back. If you don't have the husband's name, then you need to get a birth cert for one of the kids first. Maz. XX

Hi Christine If there is a page number you may have to look on the page before or page after to find the spouse. It sometimes looks as though there is a spot of polyandry or polygamy going on! Joan
