Does anyone know if it is possible to request a birth certificate, without knowing the date of birth? I have been searching unsuccessfully for my great grandfathers date of birth for many months now and I don't really know where to go next. I have his marriage and death certificates, which give me an approximate year of birth. Can I use these as checking references or should I just keep searching until I find him? Any help will be much appreciated Michelle |

Hi Lesley Thanks for your advice. However, I have spent many hours at the FRC searching 10 years either side of possible year of birth and I haven't found it. I have also checked the LDS site and the 1901 census (upon which he doesn't appear), I can't think of where to look next. I am beginning to wonder if his birth was ever registered. Michelle |

Have you tried looking under his mother's maiden name? One of my lot took his mother's name (he was illegitimate) and later took his stepfather's name. Regs Jane |

Hi Sylvia Thank for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I only know his father's name as it was on my great grandfather's marriage certificate. Michelle |

Have you tried Army Records. If your great grandfather can't be found on the 1901 census he may have been abroad in the Boer War |
