My G-Grandad fought in the Battle of the Somme WW1 but was reported missing in action and never came home. I am trying to trace the regiment he served in and have come across someone of his name and date of missing in the Common Wealth War Memorials website. I'm pretty sure that this person is my g-grandad but I would like to find out for sure. Does anyone know of an on-line website that I could confirm person and regiment details or do I need to visit a army records building and if so which? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have been hunting for my great- uncle for ages because his records do not appear to be registered on line. Are you talking about the Commonwealth War Graves Commision site?

Gillian Have you obtained your great grandfather's marriage certificate? If not, you might find that this gives his regiment and army service number. David

Hello Gillian The only way you will find out about your grandfather's WW1 service records is by visiting The PRO Kew. all the documents are kept there on microfilm. If you know your grandfathers full name and date of birth you should be able to find something in WO372 Service Medal and Award Rolls 1914 -1922. This will give you the soldiers Corps (regiment) rank, regimental Number. The first theatre of war he served in, the date he enlisted and, the date he was discharged also, which medals he was awarded. If you go to the PRO.gov in resorces it will explain what you need at Kew and, look for leaflets it will explain what they have on soldiers. Regards Shirley

Gillian, I found out my great grandfathers regiment from my grandfathers birth certificate and contacted the regiment museum to confirm that his number was definitely from that regiment, they were very helpful. Try the following: www(.)armymuseums(.)co(.)uk or www(.)regiments(.)org or www(.)armedforces(.)co(.)uk best wishes zoë
