Poor GRO Photocopy 1850

I received my gggrandfather's marriage certificate today, hoping to find out the name of his father. Unfortunately the photocopy is poor and some of the words are difficult to read, especially his father's christian name. Would the GRO be able to help me if I got in contact with them? If so, ehat would be the best way to do so?,,,,,,Russell |

when I rec'd a poor copy from them, i called them and was told if i sent it back with a covering letter they would see what they could do. AS i managed to solve my problem I didn't bother so can't comment if the second copy would be better. But give thm a call and see what they say. Can't hurt to ask can it? Shelli |

Probably not! (Ah Linda says yes so you are OK) If the information is absolutely vital to you then you could apply directly to the local registrar where the marriage took place ... at least now you can send them a copy of that certificate with dates and the church. Cost £7.00! They can look up their own records OR you could write to the relevant County Archives ( which will have copies of registers from that church) and ask them to photocopy that certificate from their marriage registers... If your ancestor could write then you will at least see his/her signature. The charge for doing this is still pretty high. I have also found some certificates from GRO have been extremely difficult to read...fuzzy! A pity because the service is otherwise excellent. |

If the GRO can't help, invest in a magnifying glass and pass it around to everyone you see, in case fresh eyes can spot something. |

Lynda, I may be incorrect, but it looks like Robert submitted his message, then added the bit about you after it was submitted. I read his message as "probably not -- oops, Lynda was successful, so you should be too." (Perhaps he read your message after he submitted his?) |

Hi Russell The same thing happened to me! I returned mine with a covering letter, and received a new (free) handwritten one the week after. If you want the original on file, do take a photocopy. Hope this helps Karen |
