What to do with e-mail spam???

I send it all to the Report Spam box and hopefully the internet provider will become inundated and do something about it. It seems to be slowing down now, although I did get a Viagra e-mail this morning. There is no point in removing details from bona fide websites since this spam is being sent across the board regardless by some indiscriminate and unscrupulous e-mailers. Kathy

The thing NOT to do is to reply to the "Remove me from your list" option. This merely confirms that your e-mail address is "live" and your address will get passed on to other spammers.

Margaret, The report spam box is aol's way of dealing with spam. If you click on this box the spam address is blocked. Gillian

I am getting so much junk mail its getting stupid. I started using Microsfot Outlook instead of Outlook Express, just because you can do more with the Junk Email filters. Alot of the emails sent to me are also sent to a whole group of people in an alphabetical order. What I've done is set up a few rules in Outlook that will permanently delete any email that has also been sent to paul(dot)creedy, paul(dot)davison, paul(dot)davies etc. It screens about 50% of the junk, but I need more ideas.

I send them to the report spam button, but the last week have been getting some every day, mainly medication, viagra, etc., I wonder what the isp does when you report them. They are still in my recently deleted mail box so do they actually go anywhere else.

Hi Margaret Am replying in my lunch break at work, but I see Gillian has already answered for me. Diane The e-mails I have been sending to Report Spam box are no longer appearing in my recently deleted box, so I hope that means something is being done. Regards Kathy

I am also on aol and my spam mail is always sent to 'report spam' button. I don't get as many 'porn' e-mails as friends on other providers get. Most of mine are offers to buy drugs like Viagra on-line. I have a seperate e-mail address (also on aol) that I just use to visit the Pub Quiz chat rooms on aol. I never use it to go on other sites. I get about 3-4 spam mails a day on this address. When I didn't use it for about 6 months, I got no e-mail at all, but as soon as I started using the chat room again the spam started again! At least on aol I don't have to open the e-mails and don't see the porno pictures that my friend on H o t m a i l gets bombarded with daily. Sue

well I'm sorry to say I did the wrong thing which was to unsubscribe. I thought it couldn't get any worse as I was getting 100-130 per day. It always took me about 30 mins to plough through it all getting rid of the junk and hoping that I'm not accidentaly deleting emails that I wanted. However, I just keep unsubscribing and it's now down to 10-20 per day which is a lot more managable. Hubby said not to do it, that it just confirms your email address but it appears to have worked anyway and he was really suprised.

You'd be surprised at how much you contribute to your own spam. Spammers trawl the internet looking for email addresses using spiders (think search engine a la Google, not tarantulas!). If you ever put your email address on a website, chances are a spammer will find it and pass it on to all his friends. Secondly, people use really obvious ones, like their name or a common phrase. Spammers guess. They will take a well-known email such as h0tmail or yah00 and work through a list BobSmith, BobSmith1, BobSmith2 etc etc. This is fine if your name is Alphonsus Titan Campbell-Soup or something equally improbable, but poor old Bob won't stand a chance. By the way, if your name appears on the internet, you give them a headstart. Thirdly, if you sign up to a website or newsletter, make sure they state in their privacy policy that they do not make your details available to others, or tick the box saying that you do not want them to pass on anything they think you might find interesting.
