Try using a Trade Directory. It lists local business and some give both a home and business address for an individual. Trade directories are usually held at the local library. The ones I've seen seem to be published every 10 to 20 years or so. I know for certain that ones held in Darlington library cover the whole of Durham, Newcastle and North Yorkshire. Many go back beyond the 1851 Census and some stretch back to the 1700s. Paul (still aiming for 1000 names on GC by Christmas!)

Marie, it's not an avenue I've actually used yet (it's on my list of places for clearing up dead ends) but the East of London Family History Society may be able to help you out. they have a website with details of what records they have but I'm sure an email to their list asking for help might produce results. Give me two tics and I'll hunt out the web address for you Zoe

Hi Kat, Thanks for your offer of help but the one rellie I really need is James Longhurst b:abt 1807 married to Hannah living in Hackney area of London. I doubt whether he would still be alive in 1891 making him 84. They didnt live very old then did they. Thanks again Marie

The addresses are usually listed on the copy of the actual census page. These can be viewed at records offices, downloaded or ordered on the 1901, and 1891 are viewable on ancestry. If you tell me the 1891 ancestor you need the address for, I can try and find it and email you the census page with the address on. Hope this helps, -Kat

I get my addresses for census searches by ordering certificates near the right times. e.g. a birth certificate for my ggg grandfather in 1849 gave me an address with which to search the 1851 census, where I discovered some older half brothers and sisters I never knew about Now I have a list of certificates for families i'm missing from the census that are all in census years and I'm slowly working my way through them zoe

Can anyone help me please. I have found rellies on 1901, 1891 and 1881 census. I have also found rellies going back to late 1700s but I have no address so I cant check them out on any London census as they are address searched. Am I stuck here? Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks Marie
