Does anyone know if the name Ada is short for anything I have been trying to find the marriage of James Mansfield and Ada but have not been successful. I need Ada's maiden name. Their first child was born approx 1865, so I would of thought it would be prior to that date. Thanks

Siobhan As far as I know, Ada is the full name. Not short for anything. Margaret

Only one I could find was Adrianna Ada was quite a common name though Bob

I thought that was the case. Perhaps Ada was her middle name which she decided to take as first, which is why I can't find her. Having tried finding birth of children to see if I can locate her, but have still had no luck.

Siobhan, From what I can make out, Ada may be a corruption of the female form of Adam but it is also linked to Eadith (now spelt Edith) or Ida which are derived from the word 'mad' which is from the Anglo Saxon word 'ead' meaning 'happy' or 'a source of joy' (pick the bones out of that little lot!!) I suppose therefore, it might just be worth looking her up as Edith or Ida! Hope this helps (doubt it will but what the heck!) Eleanor xx

will give it a try. If i could find one of the gro references for the children then i could order the birth cert to find out her name. But I can't even find that. :(

I've had four Adas in my family, my nan, two great nans and now my aunty and that is the full name, in my case Ada is not shortened.

Not much help to you I know, but I had an aunt Peggy whose actual name was ADA - apparently she became known as Peggy after a favourite dog of the family!!! (I dread to think why) It's only since starting the family tree game have I discovered her proper name!! Jacqui

Hi Siobhan, You did'nt say which area you were looking in for the marriage but found this on IGI 08 June 1856 Christ church Southwark London Marriage James Mansfield 27 Martha Adelaide Russell 25 Batch number M020701 Could this be them? Jane Jacqueline My mum was christened Peggie. Apparently she was named after her Mother, Grandmother. Gt Aunt and gt Grandmother and they were all christend Rhoda. My Gt Aunt Margaret used to be called Peggie by her work friends too, so it seems that Peggie was used as a nickname for anything really. By the way one of my sisters is also called Peggie and her nickname at school was Peg Leg the Pirate. Kids can be so cruel. lol.

I have also had trouble with Ida /Ada and have found Aida too, my relatives believe it could be a pet form of Lydia, The Lydia I was looking for was known as Annie or Aida! Good Luck!

Got this from behind the name website ADA f English Pronounced: AY-da Short form of ADELAIDE. This name was borne by Ada Lovelace, a daughter of Lord Byron and an assistant to Charles Babbage, the inventor of the analytical engine, an early mechanical computer. Anna

Hi Jane I wish that marriage was them, but it is too early as James would of only been 15. in 1856. Thanks alot everyone with your advice, but I have manage to find the gro ref for the birth of one of their children, my great grandmother infact, so am now waiting for the Birth Cert to arrive and it will then hopefully confirm who this Ada is. Will keep you all updated.
