Help with place of birth

I think it was quite usual for just the name of the vilage to appear on certificates if it really was a village. I have several like this. I presume everyone in the village knew where they lived and didn't need an address - they didn't think of us!! Anne

Hi Amanda No the birth certificate gives no address at all, not for place of birth or for residence of informant. It just says Aldbourne which is the village in Wiltshire that they came from. It is very annoying. There is a rumour in the family that these ancestors were some kind of travellers so maybe that is why. Their other two children born after William were born in Essex and Suffolk and on 1901 census they were living in Ipswich. Anyway thanks again everyone Sharon

Hi Thanks for all your help. I have been in contact with help desk on the site you order certificates from. They have told me that it does mean rural sub district. Its a bit frustrating i was hoping the birth certificate was going to provide me with an address to follow up. Thank you all anyway Sharon

Hi Sharon, I had that under the address of birth on one of my certificates, and when I asked what it stood for they said, "that is always put under an address were the place or district no longer exists". Some times they only put RD, but still means the same. Hope that helps Valerie

Sometimes they mentioned 'sanitation' districts - could it be that?

I think this denotes the type of area it is. UD means Urban District. RSD could be Rural something District On the other hand, it could be something totally different.

Hi I have just received gt grandfathers birth certificate through the post, the place of birth is listed as Aldbourn R.S.D Does anyone know what this stands for? I knew he was born in Aldbourne,Wiltshire but have no idea what the r s d stands for. Also under the place of residence and description of informant it has his fathers name and just Aldbourn with no other details of address, is that usual. Hope someone out there can help me please Thanks Sharon
