I have just received a Birth Cert from 1946 and am trying to find out what the fathers occupation is, it reads: Pte. R.A.G.C. Any Ideas

It sounds to me like Private in some Corp of the army, but I'm not up on the different regiments. You could check with a local recruiting office.

Hi Donna, Was he in the army because he might have been a Private RA Gunner, not sure what the C stands for, someone on the site is in the army saw a reply from them yesterday if you put a reference to the army in the heading they might see it. Hope you find out soon. Gen

There's a list of regimental abbreviations at http://www.regiments.org/milhist/regtintro/abbrev.htm. No RAGC, but there is an RADC (Royal Army Dental Corps) & RAEC (Royal Army Educational Corps) amongst others. Both of those units were only set up under those names from November 1946 tho'.
