My Gtx3 grandmother is shown as Pamela Ann on the IGI christening entry, Pamelia Ann on her wedding certificate, Ann on the 1881 census, Francilia (??) on the 1891 census and Pamela on her death certificate. Also ages seem to alter dramatically - I think half the entries on the censuses were guesswork! Helen

My grandfather, Charles Alfred, is Charles on the 1881, Alfred on the 1891, and missing from the 1901. Jan.

Maureen I seem to remember reading somewhere that when the census was taken, people were asked to give the name by which they were usually known - not necessarily the name given at birth. In my family, all the Henrys were known as Harry; Garnet was known as Guy; Miriam was known as Marrie, etc. ................ I would think that Lydia and Mary are quite possibly the same person, but it might be worth your while compiling two separate trees until you are absolutely sure. You don't want to go eagerly barking up the wrong branch, do you?! Janet

Quite possible. Some people were known by their middle name and if the person the enumerator spoke to gave him the name they used then that would appear on the census. On my grandfathers birth certificate his mother is Annie, on her marriage certificate she is Johanna. My mum is Enid Joan, but dad calls her Joan, so he would probably give that name to anyone who asked.
