I run a boarding cattery and have a lot of customers which I chat to and as I am now becoming a genealogy bore it is usually on family history. The other day a lady told me that her mother who was in her 80's was illegeitimate and had been brought up by a relative as her mother had done a runner. Anyway, whilst in her 80's she developed a skin condition of huge blisters and was taken into hospital. Nobody could diagnose her problem so brought in a specialist who asked her if she was Jewish. She said "No, I'm CofE". The doctor said that he had to tell her that her condition was a genetic one found only in European Jews. It turned out that at the time she was conceived her mother was working for a Jewish Doctor who had a son (it appears the father). The old lady was very happy to know that she came from a respectable family rather than a one night stand. Georgina

What a fascinating story! I once interviewd an elderly lady about her time in service to a rich family. She told me she had left them when she found she was pregnant. They purchased a cottage for her and gave her a life long pension. How very kind? Anyway she never did reveal the fathers name. The child was in his seventies at the time and still lived with her.
