Am doing transcribing from handwritten scan for FreeBMD, and am puzzling over a District name. Sept Q 1849 Births, William Sheen (there are 2 of them), the first 1 is registered at Blaby, the next one is the one I need. Thought at first it was Houghton (short for Houghton le Spring) but the district Volume code for that is XXIV, and although my volume code is not clear, am sure it isn't that. On further looking, the recorder does a funny capital B, but in that case looks as though something before that *Baughton, but can't find a district like that. The page number is 64. Hope someone can help, thanks. Val

Wow. Strange writing I think it's G Boughton XIX, Great Boughton. It's there once you see how to see it: the loop at the top of the G (see George) has got detached from its tail and at the same time it's joined on to the line above, so it looks like it's part of the fancy B on Blaby

Thanks for that suggestion Robin, not sure about the District Vol being XIX though, looks to me like it at least starts XV, the slant seems the wrong way to be XI anything? Regards Val P.S was that District Vol clear on the page you saw?

Valerie There is a Boughton in Northants and one in Norfolk. There doesn't seem to be a Baughton. I think I would go more for XII or XIV. If you look at the 'I's further up the page they are not consistent, and I think it depends on which stroke of the X is done last as to which way the I slants. On this basis, looking at it again, zoomed to 300% I think it's XIX - which brings it back to Gt Boughton, although I can't personally see the Gt. Sue

Thanks for confirming the XIX Sue, there is a crease line through the Vol that i've got, so wasn't sure on that. I could see the G though after Robin explained it, but it took a while. Regards Val
