In the Sep qtr 1838 deaths there is a Damascene Hamilton and an Alexander Hamilton, both with asterisks in the district, volume and page columns. I understand that means that the transcriber was unable to even make an attempt at reading the original. I am quite certain that the Damascene was a gggrandmother and suspect that the Alexander may have been her child who died shortly after birth. In that case the district is likely to have been Poplar, but if the original is that poor I doubt that it is worth trying to decipher 1837online. What would be the best way to get hold of the certificates(s)?

Brian Have been on 1837 online. Alexander and Damascene are not part of the same family I don't think. Alexander is Belford - XXV 121 Damascene is St James or John I think (its says Jas maybe) Westminster. can't read next one but I believe the number is 85. The next on the list is an Eliza, maybe no relation but the district is the same as Damascene. That's the one that makes me think it could be John. That's vol 1 page 94 so, Damacene's vol will be 1 too. Perhaps you can troll around the Westminster districts on genuki to find it. One thing, you may have to send to the GRO for the certificate, I sent to the local reg at Westminster a couple of years ago, they won't supply, say they are too busy. Margaret

Thank you both for your replies. St James would tie up with other info. but I will follow up your suggestions to take this forward.
