Kim, It's something to do with the Workhouse and the Poor Laws. Have a look at this site users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/Chard/ or just type Chard Union into Google Jane

Hi All My Granny did our Fry family tree years ago. It goes back to Christopher Fry born 1798. It says on the tree "Volunteer 1798. Said to have been Govenor of Chard Union" Does anyone know anything about Chard Union, or what he would have been a volunteer in? Many thanks Kim
