What is GEDCOM?

Personally I have chosen to duplicate the information using PAF for quick local access and printing, and GC for extra information and searching. As one might only add a couple of relations a week (if you are lucky) it's not too much of a fag and gives the best of both worlds.

Ann, I don't use Family Tree maker, but usually you can choose to 'export' your file and then select 'gedcom' type to create a name.ged. (Maybe just 'save as' or similar). Yes I think you do have to delete all data on GC before you can upload from a gedcom. They keep promising me that we will be able to download from this site in the future but it isn't possible yet. (If I had known when I started what I know now, I wouldn't have started my tree on here!) Marian

I have tried to upload Gedcom but it is telling me that only the owner's name has to be in the tree does that mean I have to delete all my tree and start again? Ann

Joan, you can read the GEDCOM file using any family tree package, eg PAF, Legacy which are both free to download. Marian

Vanessa, GEDCOM is the name of a certain type of file which contains family tree data. Its kind of a universal type of family tree file. All Family Tree software handles the data you put it in differently. However almost all has the ability to convert the information into a specific standardised format that we call a gedcom file. He's a simple way to look at it.... imagine all the cupboards in the world. Some are stored with coats on the left, trousers in the middle and t-shirts on the right. Others have t-shirts on the left. Well in a GEDCOM cupboard all the clothes are ordered in the same way across the world - with all GEDCOM cupboards having coats on the left, followed by smart suits, then jeans and on the far right t-shirts. So no matter who goes into the cupboard, you will know where to look for a t-shirt. When a program reads a GEDCOM file it knows where to find a date of birth or an occupation or a name. Hope this helps Paul

Lots of sites mention GEDCOM. What is it? Should I load it? How does it work? Help, please! Thanks, Vanessa
