thanks sylvia that is a real possability, there were a few tailors in the area, and also lace factorys

Hi Gary Probably of no help, but in tailoring "gimp" is used to face collars and the edges of jackets etc. so could these people have worked in that line of trade? Or you could try Ranks, Professions,Occupations and Trade at www(.gendocs(.)demon(.)co(.)uk/trades(.)html Sue

on the 1881 census a couple of young chaps living at allenton derby were listed as being O Gimpers, any idea what a gimper did, most people from this area worked at the railway workshops and foundrys so could be tied to this
