When you purchase a CD from Archive CD Books, it specifically states in the Terms and Conditions that you will not advertise free lookups. However, there is nothing to stop you from replying to a plea for information. Who is to know where you got the information from? Just tell everybody which area you've got information about and wait for people to ask ~lol~. A few months ago I saw an extract from a Baines Directory on Genuki which I wanted to include on my website. I emailed the transcriber and asked for permission to include it, but was told in no uncertain terms that it was not allowed, which I thought a bit harsh as my site is not commercial and it's really only members of the family who ever look at it. I also said I would acknowledge the source and include a link to Genuki. A few weeks later I found the extract had been transcribed by somebody else and again asked for permission to use it. This time permission was freely given and in addition I was asked if I would like a link to my site! However, I digress. I have bought quite a few CDs from Archive CD Books and my experience of them has been very positive. Their customer service seems a lot better than some of the other suppliers. Rod Neep does sometimes allow people on specific message boards to offer lookups for a limited time. Sue

Surely this comes under the same thing as posting a quote from a book. Copyright laws allow small portions to be copied. Look at the notice beside any library photocopier.

I AGREE EITHER THE INFORMATION SHOULD BE FREE, AFTER ALL OUR ANCESTORS DID NOT CHARGE TO GIVE IT TO THE ENUMERATOR! NOW THERE ARE LOTS OF MONEY MAKING WEBSITES, I REALISE THAT YOU SHOULD PAY SOMETHING FOR PEOPLES TIME AND EFFORT , BUT SOME OF THE COSTS ARE EXTORTIONATE AND ARE ONLY THAT HIGH BECAUSE THE PRODUCERS KNOW THERE IS A DEMAND.......

Who does this information belong to. If it is free to see at the records office. What are we paying for ? The Cd you wouldn`t pay £3o for a C.D. so you must be paying for the information. If so the information on the Cd Belongs to you. Cant you use that information as you like. The persons who put the CD together have already been paid and released the information into the puplic domain. I for one would like to know how we stood legally. Mary

Yes, some of them do kick up quite a fuss. I can see why, but at the same time most people simply cannot afford to spend £30 on each and every census for each county they need. Maybe this is why they're indexed by address only - it's a cunning plan to make us all buy them because no-one is going to spend hours scouring towns and cities on behalf of someone they don't know.

having recently been given a 1861 cd for my home county as a present, i noticed on a local family research website people had posted messages to do look ups on various subjects, so i mailed them that i would gladly do lookps for1861 for them, i was told by the webmaster that if my data source was from archive cd books disc, the owner rod neep had told them they were not to post messages offering look ups from this source. I can see the thinking behind this, but if you have only 1 stray in your tree you are not going to pay £30+ for a cd, so i dont think he would lose any trade, but he will now because the wish list i have of about 10 cds now will not be purchased from him, ancestry do not appear to have a problem with this, so i for one will not be buying any more from him
