Shelli Yes indeed you can search the census' by address at the FRC. They have very good indexes (although they take a good ten mins of thinking hard to figure out how they work - well it did for me). If you don't think you can get down anytime soon I am trying to squeeze in a quick trip when I'm down to see family at christmas (if they're open on Monday 22nd) - so let me know if you want me to try and find them. Otherwise I'll be there at the end of January if you're still looking then. Zoe

1891 census is searchable by name only, not address. Margaret

Ann can you search the 1891 by address only? if you can would mind if i send you the address from the 1890 marriage cert because maybe just maybe it's another part of the family living at one/both of the addresses

Sue I had thought of that but this two very differnt addresses for the marriage cert!!! and they already lived in the area of the church I think so didn't need to give false address to marry in that church.

Ann I have found them in both 1881 & 1891 they resided in..... 1881 - Delaford Place Camberwell 1891 - Ducketts place Mile End Old Town his address on cert - Scot street Brady Street her address on cert - Teesdale Street I have located all of these except Delaford Place (have foudn a poss match) and they are all in same area, not too far apart Mary I thought that maybe they had given false addresses to the priest to avoid embrassment but as you say what did they say/do about the kids? by the date they married they had 6!!!! Also they married in the parish church in the parish of Stepney which was their local one????

I have three marriage certificates two from 1897 and another in 1930 - in all three cases the bride and the groom have addresses in the same streets but at different house numbers. I was looking for the couple from the 1930 cert. only to be told by an elderly rellie that NEITHER of them ever lived in that street. They just happened to want to get married at that particular church and told a porky pie! it also saved money on having the banns read in two different parishes! Sue.

Mary Report 10 Dec 2003 22:18

People who were getting married often changed their address if they were getting married in a different parish to where they lived so they would be able to get married there. Sometimes this was done to hide the embarrisment of living together (What they did with the children I don`t know) Mary

Hi Are either of the addresses the one they were at in the 1881 census? Or in the locality? Maybe she was following the bride's tradition of being apart on the night before the wedding (?!). I might be able to look on 1891 if you let me know where they were in 1881/90. best wishes A

I have an ancestor Ellen Jane Mills born 18/09/1881 to Richard Mills and Jane Mills nee Sheridan. I have found this family in 1881 and 1891 . Ellen is the second child to this couple, the eldest is listed as 1 in the 1881 census. As I have the birth cert of ellen giving her mother maiden name, I searched for a marriage. I hoped it would be just before the birthof the first child..... WRONG. I finally found one but it's for 21 July 1890. No problem i thought they had kids then maaried it happens!!! I ordered it, but now it's arrived I'm not sure I have the right one. The reason I'm unsure is because the cert lists them as living in seperate addresses. If this is my couple, why would they do that, as they'd been living together for over 10 years? As I can't find any other marriage for the same names I'm unsure what to do next........ Any ideas?
