Thank you all for your replies - I think space would be a problem even if I could find one cheaply. Thank goodness for the local library, they said this afternoon it would be ok to take my own films in. Jan.

I have been to alot of Garage eqquipment sales,at bankrupt garages and seen fiche views, as used in there parts departments sell for a couple of pounds sometimes they can not give them away, so keep an eye in your local paper for baankruptcy sales at garages and you may be lucky.

I'd just like to add that I bought my fiche reader from ebay for £65. It's quite big, that's the main problem. I know someone who bought one from ebay for £35. Really depends how often you think you would use it. In my case I have bought parish registers for places that I would have to travel to and perhaps need an overnight stay, in which case the price paid for the fiche and the reader is covered, and you can look at them in the comfort and convenience of your own home. Hi Jan, Most local libraries have at least one fiche reader, and very easy to use. Its cheaper than buying your own which you may or may not get that much use from once you have searched the fiche. I have lots of baptismal records etc on microfiche and have spent many a fruitless evening at the library with little to show for it. I could have wasted a lot of money otherwise, and the cost of the fiche is minimal. Marion

I want to buy a census index for Kent, but this appears to be only available on microfiche. How do I read this? Is there a small fiche reader available, or do I have to go to the library? Jan
