Thanks for your reply, presumably it was just an ad hoc thing .Then it will be hard to trace any records without full names, I only have a christian name !

Apologies if this has been asked before,could not find it. if someone had an illegitmate child around 1910ish would the name on the birth certificate be blank where the father was and then changed when the child was adopted or did the adoption become registered separately? I know my grandfather either fathered an illegimate daughter or his wife already had one! how do I trace without a name of the adoptive parents? Is it possible or not?thankyou KIM
