Thankyou, He is on the 1891 census as Ebenezer Cracknell aged four months and his marriage certificate in 1916 shows him as Edward Ebenezer. According to the 1891 census he was born in Sunderland but on the 1901 census he was born in Leeds (but I have found other discrepancies with the entry on 1901 so I assume that 1891 is more correct. The family were probably on the road as music hall entertainers because the 1891 census shows them staying in a lodging house in Bishop Auckland

Hi Linda I've had a look on the VRI for an Edward Cracknell and Ebenezer Cracknell - but there's nothing showing up for 1890. Do you know where the family lived? With best wishes, Linda

Linda Free BMD only 72% complete for that year. Some were not registered. Some are on local registers but not on GRO. VRI is "vital records Index" but that is not complete. Some on here have the CD and will have a look for you. Have you got him on the 1891 census? Bob

I have 2 questions, firstly what is the VRI? and secondly Is it possible that an 1890 birth could not have been registerd as I am unable to find a GRO number for Edward Ebenezer Cracknell on both FREEBmd and 1837 online
