Andy, I have had a quick look and cant see the ref under Ho 144 although there are similar numbers listed. I have tried putting it in the ref box but it says no record located. What are you putting in to see? Regards Helena

Andrew, I spotted the name on the PRO with under the assizes records charged with murder. As its a fairly uncommon name (Hicken) and in the right area I took a chance and asked for an estimate online. I cannot recall now whether I had to apply in writing or on line for the actual documents. There is not much detail given on the PRO site, usually just a name under each index so it helps if you know what you are looking for. I took a chance and was lucky but it could easily have been the other way. When I get back from work I will check your ref. Regards Helena

Helena, did you find your info direct from PRO website or did a researcher get it for you ? I wouldnt be suprised if the 100 year rule was a recent addition since you obtained your info. I wonder if you looked up your info on PRO website again if you can still request it. Im looking at http://catalogue(.)pro(.)gov(.)uk the PROCAT bit. and the document ref HO 144/1762/429869 if you would like to see what im talking about. cheers Andy

Hello Andrew, I have never heard of the 100 year bit. Maybe they come under different listings depending result of the trial? As mine was in 1905 the hundred year ruling could not have applied as I received the documents in 2002. Could it be to do with the protection of remaining family? Let me know if you find out. Regards Helena X

Helena, I have found details of a relative on PRO for being convicted of murder, but the document is closed for 100 years, not due to open till 1st Jan 2023! I would assume that the documents you wanted to view were not closed or you wouldnt have been able to get an estimate to view / copy the documnets.

Thanks Helena, some valuable info there. I would like to research more about a family murder that occurred in 1922, I thought that It maybe subject to a 100 year confidentiality clause so would have to wait a good number of years, not much good for elderly relatives that what to know now. thanks again and Happy Christmas

Andrew, I found one of my rellies murders on the PROin 1905. I sent off for an estimate of what it would cost to see details. Although it was £40 I did receive alot of info. There were copies of the charges as well as loads of witness statements from family and friends. There was even copies of doctors reports and letters from the wardens that looked after her while on remand. I must add that it was distressing to read and people should be aware of this fact, even if they did not know the person. Regards Helena

maybe a silly question but what sort of information will you get from the PRO records regarding your grandmothers murder ?

Hi, A good researcher can do in an hour what it takes an amateur many hours. I have used an excellent researcher for some PRO work and have found her charges very reasonable. She's a lot cheaper than the train fare. Gwynne

I have managed to locate the records relating to the murder of my grandmother but the PRO tell me that there are too many to copy. I have looked at the costs of researchers and they are quite expensive, it will also cost me a fair bit to get down to London. Is there any other way. The PRO says that if someone counts them they will be able to copy them and charge me.
