Do you mean Northern Ireland or Ireland? Before 1922 they were one country. Some pre-1922 sites refer to places now in Northern Ireland as Ireland, others call it Northern Ireland because that's where it is now. Ordering certificates can be especially infuriating. For example, on the online order form for marriage certificates, you need to specify the bride's maiden name and her usual address. These fields are complusory. Quite why they index certs by bride's address is beyond me.

I'd agree with all the previous advice. Irish on-line genealogy is improving but it does depend on the area you are researching. www(.)leitrim-roscommon(.)com is very good for those areas.

As a few people on GC will tell you, research into Irish roots can prove to be.... confusing shall we say. Two sites you could try are genuki and cmcrp. They both have county forums, etc which may help. If you contact me direct, I will send you other info later on this evening. Paul

Hi Diane. I haven't been too successful with my Irish side; probably doesn't help that I have surnames like Sullivan, Stuart, Brown, etc. I'm sure others can give you better sites, but until they make suggestions, you might start with: http://www.cyndislist(.)com/ireland.htm (remove the brackets) I've found Cyndi's List to be quite helpful for my Canadian relatives (I haven't actually tried the one for Ireland). Do you have dates and place names? Do you know how to do a "Google" search? (I didn't before joining GC.) I've gotten on the Google website and used the advanced search and actually found a website that mentioned my ancestor. Good luck with your search.

Hi, I have decided to take the plunge and try to research my husbands maternal side who come from Ireland. Can anybody give me any advice on where to start, if there are any good sites to try. I have looked on the IGI, nothing seems to fit, also Ancestry, they do not have much to start where I have information from. Thanks for any pointers. Cheers Diane
