Hi Sharon Going back to the 17th century, most wills in the north of England will have been registered in York. These are now in the Borthwick Institute of Historical Research in the City. There is no computerised index, although main libraries will probably have copies of the microfilm index. This is alphabetical by year and tedious to search, but better than nothing. I believe copies of wills can be obtained for a charge, but I have never tried this. Wills for the south of England, including people who owned property in both north and south, were recorded at Canterbury, and these can be accessed on line. Best wishes Stan

Sharon. I logged onto Documents Online had a free search then was able to buy WILLS TO DOWNLOAD for £3.each.the copys that i have are a bit hard to read,but its the writing of the time i think. Hope this helps. Mary

Hi, Where the wills are depends on where they were proven. The county record office would be a good start many have indexes to wills. The LDS have filmed some wills indexes as well. Gwynne

I have had considerable success in researching my STEAD family in Leeds, Tadcaster and Newton Kyme all in Yorks. I have traced the family back to 1704 and have searched for this ancestors baptism back as far as 1684 when the records are damaged and missing. So my question is this, what records can I now use to see if I can find any earlier information on this family? thanks and happy searching Sharon
