Lots of people re-married after death of a spouse. The mother-in-law could have been widowed twice - I have some of these - therefore her surname would not connect at all with her daughters maiden name. You would need the daughter's birth cert, then find first husband's death, then new marriage and 2nd husband's death etc etc!!! Maz. XX

If you have a Church of Latter Day Saints near you, ask them where their nearest records office is. There, you can order the parish records of anywhere in the country( and abroad too) for a small fee and read them at your leisure because they let you keep them for a few weeks. Happy hunting. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE. Jan Karnovski Gravesend, Kent.

I can't find a marriage between a Talbot and a Winkfield on freebmd, but Rose was born circa 1786, so if she married before 1837, she wouldn't be on freebmd. I've also looked up Rose Winkfield's death, but couldn't find it. There are only 2 marriages for a Thomas enderby before 1851 (the census with Mary and Rose on) one in Downham, Norfolk, in 1842 the choices of bride including a Mary Talbot (and i know that they both livd and had children in Downham) and the other in in Lincs in 1844 so he can't have been remarried.

Thanks Stan, Janice, Margaret and Ken for your advice, I haven't got the marriage certificate, but i might send for it if my Dad lets me! I'll go and look for a marriage between a Winkfield and a Talbot now, and report back! I don't know if she was a spinster or a widow, how would i find this out? would it say once i'd ordered the marriage certificate? I still need to go to my local Family History Centre, so if i ask them if they can get the Norfolk records, would i be able to look the marriage up there, or is there no way that the records from one county will be held in another county? I don't know anything about these LDS centres! Somebody explained it all to me but i think i've forgotten it all! Thanks again, Nicola

Nicola Have you thought of sending for Mary's birth cert. That would give both of her parents names or show you if she was illegitimate. Margaret

When Thomas Enderby married Mary Talbot was Mary a spinster or a widow? Talbot could be her previous married name.

Both these possibilities are quite likely. Perhaps you should search for a marriage of a Winkfield to someone called Rose Talbot? Stan

Laid it out better, for ease of reading: On a census return, it says that the widowed Mother in law to the head (thomas Enderby)of house was a Rose WINKFIELD, so that would make the wife(mary) of the head's maiden name WINKFIELD, no?! But the only marriage i can find between the head and wife shows that her surname was (mary)TALBOT, so would this mean that her mother (rose) remarried and her 1st hubby was the father of mary? Or that she was an unmarried mother and her maiden name was TALBOT? I'm really confused! Are there any other possibilities?? Thanks very much, Nicola
