Where exactly are these records held? are they in the church themselves? if so, can you just turn up and ask to look or do you have to book ahead?

Thanks Do I assume then that the parish records for all (or most) churches in Chesham would be in the local record office? next question...how do I find the local record office? is there a list of them somewhere? sorry to sound so dim but I am trying to get my head round it all..honest, I am!

I think that you will find the parish records at the Buckinghamshire Records office. You should be able to find this information at the main Buckingham library. I don't think that you will find them online unless someone has transcribed them. Try the GENUKI site first. John

Have you a Church of Latter Day Saints near you. If so ask them where their nearest Records Office is, make an appointment to view their records and you will be able to order the parish records that you want regardless of which parish you want!! I have rellies in Yorkshire, Wiltshire, Suffolk etc and have found them all at the LDS in Gillingham, Kent. You don't have to be a member and they are not allowed to try to convert you. Give it a try - it's brilliant!!!!!

Thanks I might give that a go. I'm off up to Aylesbury tomorrow to the Records office there to see what I can find.

Caroline You do usually need to ring and book a fiche or film reader in advance. If you just turn up you may find you have had a wasted journey. These places get very busy. Also, you may need a readers ticket, these are free but you will need some ID Margaret

Thanks Margaret I have already phoned and spoken to the lovely (and VERY helpful) lady there who looked up a marriage while I was on the phone. Anyway, I've booked my reader for 10am so wish me luck.
