Merchant Navy and the census

My GGrandfather was a ships carpenter, presumably in the merchant navy. I can find no trace of him or his family in the 1891 census and only his family in the 1901. Question: Were merchant seamen required to be enumerated in either census, (just like the Royal Navy) or were they just ignored. Also, where can I search for any merchant navy records. Thanks for any help. Carol in Rochester, New York.

Yes all ships and their personnel should be shown on the census. However, for some censuses they are shown on a separate index. I would suggest that you contact the FRC by telephone and see where they suggest that you look. My family also were ship's carpenters/shipwrights, but were landbased. It could just be that yours are mis-transcribed, or not where you are expecting. If you put the names etc on here then someone will look for you I am sure. Maz. XX

Christine & Maz, Thank you both. Seems I goofed in my earlier mesage. This particuler GGrandfather was a Marine engineer. His name was Thomas Bunnell, wife Emma. In 1891 they would have had at least one child, Elsie. They were married in 1888 in Birkenhead, Cheshire which is where Emma, Elsie, William and Harold were living in the 1901 census. If anyone can help in tracing Thomas, I would be grateful. Regards, Carol
