Confused by 1901 census account sessions

It is possible to look up your relatives in 48 hours, but I personally don't like being rushed. You'll also notice that 75p does not go into £5. If you set your session limit to £6, you get eight 75p views.

It is much much more convenient to use Vouchers .... You can buy them online or possibly at your local archives office or perhaps even a large central library. Can be bought as £5.00 or £10.00. I cannot see any advantage at all in buying 48 hours credit online in spite of the fact that the PRO originally recommended that route. (Being cynical, I suspect that they expected that folks would not spend the fiver within the 48 hour period and they could pocket the change for nowt)

Hi Ian Using the 1901 census decoder can also be very helpful at finding family groups before you start paying. If you don't have it it can be downloaded and launched from your desktop. The decoder can be downloaded from www(.)censusdecoder(.)com - usual rule of removing the brackets applies. John

Wow, what rapid replies, slow Monday?!. Thanks for explaining the ‘account session’ I bought some credits with 1837online and they have about a month’s life I suppose I had that in my head when I read the ‘account session’ info on the PRO site. Gwynneth: Thanks for the tip about the page image as opposed to the (poor) transcription. Rosemary: I’ll keep that in mind when I start using / paying I will wait a while as I have only just started researching my tree and only have one person to look up, my granddad 1879 –1945. Cheers Ian

Hi Ian, I always do all the index searches I need before I start paying. Then I have a list of images I want to download. I usually spend more than £5 per session. I would advise you to download the page (for 75p) rather than the transcription for 50p as the transcribing is very poor. Remember to log out rather than close the page or the session may finish before you are ready to close it. Gwynne

Ian Yes, that is what it means. Prepare your notes before you open a session so that you know exactly what you are looking for. That way you don't waste time or money. Margaret

OK I’m the fist to admit that I am not the sharpest knife in the box but I’m sure the help on the 1901 census is confusing!! “An Account Session is a 48 hour period during which you use chargeable services” Does that mean that after paying £5 you only have 48 hours to do all your research ?? surely not. Can one of you good people please explain to this foolish newby what they are trying, and failing miserably, to say. Thanks Confused and befuddled Ian
