i have received a copy of birth certificate of my paternal grandmother , her mother has marked with a cross according to the GRO. According to the freebmd /ancestry records the FATHER married an Anne Maria Cuss but the birth certificate says the mothers name is Mary Clarke , I just wondered if they signed with a cross whether their surname could have become Cuss from Cross, when really it should have been Clarke. I have found a few Cuss families in the area but it doesn't tie in with what is on the birth certificate. Any advices please? Very confused KIM

Kim, people who could not write always signed their name with a cross. Very common before 1900. I have several certificates with just the cross on them. Marian

Kim i agree with Marian it simply means that the person concerned couldn't read or write a common problem back then. Another way it's sometimes put is..... the mark of Shelli

yes, I thought it was she couldn't write. The thing is mothers name on the birth certificate is Mary Clarke married to JONAH Weaver . but on freebmd /ancestry it is Annie Maria Cuss married Jonah Weaver. I'm wondering if she signed her name on the marriage certificate with a cross whether it got mistaken on the records from Cross to Cuss or whether she was a Clarke all along. in 1901 he is married to Annie Weaver there is no sign of Mary mentioned so perhaps Annie died and he remarried or perhaps the two women are the same. I'm just trying to fathom it all out . I thought having the birth cert would confirm things but it has just thrown up more queries?! Just looked on Ancestry and he did marry again... answered my own problem.. .I'll go now then ! Kim

FreeBMD/Ancestry doesn't tell you who married who, it only tells you which names are on the same page. If there's less than 4 names, it's probably an incomplete list and more names will be added later, but they don't get added in married pairs. So on this evidence you don't really know that the first wife was actually Annie Marie Cuss

When was the marriage? About 80 years ago they started putting the surname of the other partner on marriage indexes (1837online) but before then it was just a list of names on a page. Those two names don't sound or look anything like one another, which makes me think Robin is right - Jonah's bride hasn't been transcribed yet. The only way to be sure is to order his marriage certificate.
