Hi Everyone, I have recently been told that my grandfather was raised in an orphange in London, I assume some time after 1901 as I have found hin with his parents on that census. Is there anywhere that has a listing of children brought up in orphanges in London? Pauline

Hello Pauline, with regard to your query, I would suggest that you try the local authorities for the London boroughs and parish records for the area your grandfather was located in. Also check Church of England and Catholic records as these instiutions had their own places. I hope this helps. Yours Derek.

Pauline, One of my lot was in Dr Stephenson's Home in Bethnal Green, London. He was a Methodist minister and there were eventually several homes bearing his name. These became part of the National Childrens' Homes network. Records are at the Sydney Jones Library at Liverpool University. If you put 'Sydney Jones' into Google you should find it - you can also do a search of the archive. HOWEVER, getting access to the actual records requires special permission - you can't just go there and see them. I think you have a particular problem if you don't know which orphange it is - post 1901 Census, we're in uncharted territory! If you have an idea of the area, you might try the London Metropolitan Archive to see what orphanages might have been in the area - they are quite helpful in answering email enquiries. Hope this helps. Regs Jane
