I have found a person who I am 99.9% sure is my grandfather, but in 1900 he married someone other than my grandmother. Is there a site on line where I can find out if/when he was divorced? I live in NZ so cannot make any personal visits to librarys etc.

Hi, There is no way that I know of to get proof of divorce on line. If you send for the cert it will tell you the "state" of both parties ie widowed, divorced, single. Gwynne

hi Cherryl, even when you do get a cert you can't be sure its telling the truth. my g grandmother married for a second time in1912 and on the cert it says she is a widow although i've since found out that the first husband died in 1929. on her 3rd marriage cert its says again that shes a widow but as yet i haven't found out what happened to him.(she also claims to be 45 but really shes 56). another g grandmother said she was a spinster on her 2nd marriage cert but was still married to her first husband. what interesting g grans i have ,i would love to have known them, good luck, Karen

Hello My great-great grandfather was divorced and on his marriage certificate for his second marriage to my great-great grandmother (when he eventually got round to it!) it says 'Divorced husband of Mary Ann Dawkins' in the section where it usually indicates that the person is bachelor or spinster.
