Hi, Individual county Family History Scoieties produce indexes. Most have indexed the 1851 census but some have only done an index so you still have to consult a film of the census for the full details. Others have transcribed the whole census. The LDS have indexed and transcribed Warwick, Devon and Norfolk 1851. Some FHS have indexed the 1861 and 1871 but not as many as have done the 1851. The only fully indexed censuses freely available are the 1881 and the 1901. Subscribers to ancestry have access to an indexed 1891 census. Some FHS have already indexed the 1891. Look at the websites of County FHS to see what is available. Gwynne

Please could anyone tell me, Does 1851 census search by surname? Do not want to buy if like 1841 census when you have to go through by place. Also if not by surname what year does it start by same? Thank you in antcipation.
