Since looking from August 2003 for the entry for above on the census. have now found entry under the name" Dare" so don't give up its on there somewhere . however misspelt...In fact there seem to be more mispellings on the 1901 website in my tree than I care to recall........So keep searching and using those wild cards! Since I posted this I've found what I believe is their marriage, after spending a small fortune on 1837 online . They were married in Reading where I never would have looked, so will send off for the marriage cert and take it from there. many thanks for all your advices and inspirations, I just don't want to order loads of "wrong" certs and go up the wrong branch as it were....... Thankyou all KIM

Philip forgot to mention that the marriage cert should also give you the father's name and occupation, to help identify the right birth cert and your father's birth cert is supposed to give his mother's first married name (ie. her name at the 2nd marriage) as well as her maiden name

he's pretty sure of the age and I have trawled through from 1899 to 1902 on 1837 online over time and collected all the possible entries . The thing is there are so many and when all you hold is a rough idea, yes I could get some birth certifcates.but nobody would know if they were right so I would waste money, And the marriage certificate doesn't show where born. The marriage was also tricky as they were both on their second and I don't know the names of the respective first partners or where? when? they married. I think I may have to leave this branch until I have some divine information or some long lost relative appears. Thankyou Kim

I'm trying to trace my grandfather born around 1900. All my father knows is he lived in Chichester in 1916 or so. There are so many Ernest's that are born around this time how can I trace him if he doesn't know where he's born only where they lived . I'm not even sure when or where he married my grandmother. So to trace his birth is difficult apart from ordering loads of birth certificates which I won't be able to verify. Do I just not bother. Kim
