Dad was Alfred George, known as David. 2 of mum's aunts were Jane known as Beat and Lilian known as Mabel. Dad had great uncle called Son all his life and a family on my (half) sister's side had a Girlie and Boy (don't know their real names)! Also got a friend Violet known as *** have to keep it secret as no-one knows her real first name!! Maz. XX

My grandmother was called Mary but was always known as Mamie, her sister was called Dorothy but was always known as Diddy, and their brother John was always known as Jack. I discovered last year that my father's uncle had married a Mary, but just recently I purchased his son's (my father's cousin) birth cert and on there, under the mother's name, Mary had written Mamie as her name. Amused me somewhat what with my grandmother always being known as Mamie.

Well my dad's real name is Adrian Francis but he is know as Georgie by most of the family because, so the story goes, when he was born someone mentioned that he looked liked his grandfather. Only thing was his grandfather was called Edward Robert but he was nicknamed Georgie as he was born on St George's Day!

Caroline

Caroline Report 13 Jan 2004 11:34

I think some people take on their "middle" names because of the same name running through their family, ie. My dad is known as Ron although he's Charles Ronald because his dad was Charlie...also, my son is called Robert after his dad, Robert Clive (who everyone calls Clive) and his Grandad, Bobby. It is definately a pain. Caroline (diminutive of .... erm.... Caroline!) ;o)

Bob

Bob Report 13 Jan 2004 02:36

I remember recently on one of those airport progs that Kit Hesketh-Harvey was not allowed to take up his reservation because they didn't recognise Kit as the diminutive of Christopher. Bob (diminutive of Robert)

Patsy

Patsy Report 13 Jan 2004 02:22

My mum was christened Violet Kathleen, both of which she hated, so everyone (except for my granny) called her "Chris". Not really a problem, except that when she died we had to explain to her bank that the lady who had had the account with them for the last 50 years really was the same one as on the death certificate. One of my schoolfriends used to call me Sarah, and another of my friends is called by her surname (don't know quite how that one started). A friend of my brother's caused quite a stir because he wrote 'Steve' on all his GCSE exam papers. Everyone calls him Steve, teachers, friends, boss, everyone but his name is Tom. The headteacher had to write to the exam board and explain who this mysterious Steve was!

My nan was called Frances and i named my oldest daughter Eloise Frances. My nan died in 1984 and when my uncle died 2 years ago my Dad went over to Ireland to sort things out. While over there they found my uncles birth cert and it said mothers name Sarah McDonald nee Timmons. My Dad is almost 69 and he always knew his mum as Frances not Sarah. Another thing Dad thought his birthday was 3rd feb until about 2 years ago when he had to get a copy of his birth cert, when it came it said 23rd feb. So now Dad has 2 birthdays 3rd and 23rd feb, the one on the 3rd my daughter calls Grandads fake birthday. Karen

Kay

Kay Report 12 Jan 2004 19:36

My hubbys uncle is originally from Gateshead but moved to Merseyside just after WW2. He is known to his wife as Mac (surname McDonald), friends as Geordie (for obvious reasons) and his family as John. While trying to find out more about my mother-in-laws family I rang her brother - the aforementioned John/Mac/Geordie - only to be told by the man himself that his name was actually William John!! Why do they do this to us....... Happy Hunting Kay

Some time ago I asked for help on this board to try and find out some aunts names. they were: Birdie, Dolly, Hetty, Mabs and Mary but there were no birth records. With a lot of sleuthing and the recent find of a cousin I now know that they are: Bertha, Ellen, Harriet, Mabel and Evelyn respectively. The moral of this tale is to believe nothing but try, everything and ask anyone with any scrap of information before you start your search. I should have guessed earlier when I found out that my father known as Charlie all his life was registered William Charles.....keep on hunting. Roger in the deep and dark of East Sussex
