On a marriage certificate from 1850 - St Pancras, London. The Groom was a 'Pianoforte Tuner' and his father was one of these? SE(XorA)(OorC)LION MAKER I am guessing that it may also be musical. Does anyone recognise it or have a suggestion? It has been bugging me for ages! Thanks, Hilary

Do you think it could be sax/violin maker all jumbled up ... maybe thats how they met??? The only other thing that I can think of is Rexoline which I believe was a kind of cheap synthetic leather material used for floors or upholstery. Hope this helps KIM

Hilary I have the rather large Oxford Companion to Music, nothing in there like it. I dont think a Violin maker would make Sax's, different craft (Sax only invented in 1846). It might not be musical as a piano tuner doesn't make anything (apart from noise) Bob

Certainly Saxophone's make more noise than a Piano Tuner - my daughter is learning the Sax! Anyway, the Piano Tuner then went on to spend most of his adult working life as a 'Piano String Maker'. I wonder if that was promotion or demotion? Maz has just asked me to send her a scan of the certificate, because she can be quite intuitive about reading old handwriting - So I waiting for her any any other ideas. Thanks to all so far! Hilary

Hilary, I am working on it but must go out now. Have also asked for a look up for him in 1851 by e-mail. I believe the 2nd word to be MASTER and not maker. The first word may begin with S or L then AGLI in the middle! The end is a bit chopped off though!!! Grrr - will get there in the end. Back later!! Maz. XX

Is it Scagiola? Crista

I've been thinking about this, and there is a word on the tip of my tongue to do with music "machines", like a music box or early gramophone, but I just can't get it out. However, it might give you a new area to research. Jan

Looking at it so hard I am starting to doubt myself now! It could be Maker I suppose, the man's writing is AWFUL! The more I look, the more I think JAN is the nearest so far!!! Not Scagiola cos if it is a G and an L they are definitely next to each other. Gonna put it down for a bit and come back to it later! Maz. XX

Just a thought Have you got a scanner to to scan the image. that way you can zoom in on the writing to see if you can make it out that way. regards, Siobhan

Yes I do have a scanner and a magnifying glass! Neither helped much.... Someone asked earlier what the father's name was - PATRICK LYNCH, although I don't see where they are coming from on that? Anyway, I've just had another request for a scanned copy to be e-mailed, so send that later. I'm glad to see so many helpful and cheerful responses. I like the humour!

I think they are thinking about the census where it will also state his profession the 1851 should be the same. Bob

This one has finally got my family interested. They think Sealion Master is the best suggestion but maybe they're just being mischievous?
