Richard Trevithick - constructed the first steam road locomotive in 1801, and the first steam engine to run on rails in 1804. George Stephenson - first locomotive to run on rails (called 'My Lord') 1814. Stephenson's 'Rocket' won the Rainhill competition in 1829and decided the use of steam locomotives on the Liverpool and Manchester railway. This is not to deny Stephenson's contribution to the railways, but there has always been a bone of contention over who invented the first steam locomotive.

Hi All, My Stephenson connection is Mary Ann Stephenson born 1825 North tynemouth. She married Richard Bradley. My husbands sister used to have one of the original models of the rocket (which had been handed down) and other stuff as well, but unfortunately she ended up selling most of it for what ever reason (which is a shame). Robert Stephenson was an only son (of George) and produced no heirs so any relatives today would be somewhat distant. Bob

Hi James, My husbands grandmother (Beatrice Stephenson) always claimed they were related to THE George Stephenson, but like you, we have yet to find the connection! Do you think all Northern Stephenson's claim to be related?! Debbie
