The first true postal system in the UK did not start until about 1840, and in a lot of cases people would have put there address as the nearest recognisable place, so to speak. That is possibly why so many families seem ed to "live" in one address Paul

If the street officially became known as High St between 1851 and 1861, that would explain the addition of High St in the 1861 census address. If Kim is right about the families living near the Blue Pig, it is worth checking the households in the vicinity of the Blue Pig in the 1861 census for your family, and the others mentioned in the 1851 census.

Hi Kim Yeah I thought of that too, but why would it change from just blue pig to High st, Blue Pig. And none of the familes seem to be there not even mine

Maybe they just lived near the Blue Pig and the Blue PIg was the local landmark that people used before the street itself had a proper name. Or there could be a 'court ' of 2 up two down type cotages nearby, they used to fit whole extended families in very small houses . KIM

In the 1851 census my family & about 6 other familys have the address given as 'the Blue Pig' Wolvey, Warwickshire. Now the Bue pig is still there and is not that big! And in 1861 only one family is listed as living there and thats the landlord of the pub & his address is 'High St, Blue Pig, Wolvey. The only thing I can think of is that the Enumerater took them all for a drink while he filled in the forms. Can anyone shed any light as to why 7 families would be given the same address and not appear on the next census.
