Stillbirths were required to be registered as deaths since 1874, from 1927 they would be found on the stillbirth register. This applies only to true stillbirths. Bob

Bob, The Act you refer to may have been a revision of an old law but certainly in earlier years stillbirths were registered. There was a different register, older ones are held at Southport. There is a special form to apply for certificates, at the normal cost, but don't know if they are only available to next of kin. I don't think you can apply online. Elisabeth

Stillbirths will not be shown on 1837online, they have a separate index. The '0' refers to a baby who was born alive but died before his/her first birthday.

The Stillbirths Registration Act 1994 is effective from the 1st January, 1995. This means that for the first time in the history of the State, provision is being made, by law, for the registration of stillbirths. The law provides for open-ended retrospective registration of stillbirths. This means that a stillbirth which occurred many years ago can be registered provided the requirements of the Stillbirths Registration Act, which are outlined below, are met. The act only applies in relation to a child born weighing 500 Grammes (1lb 1.60zs) or more or having a gestational age of 24 weeks or more who shows no sign of life at birth. There are differences in the procedures for the registration of a stillborn child depending on the date of birth. This leaflet sets out the procedures for the registration of a stillbirth that occurred before 1st January, 1995. .................................... I guess that means that the answer to your question is that stillbirths were not registered at all 'till 1995 Bob

Can anyone tell me whether stillbirths are registered as age 0 on death indexes, or even whether still births were registered at all in 1920/1930s. Or are they registered as births? Would be glad of any information. Renee
