It's hard enough searching records when our ancestors didn't play fairly. With them changing their surname spellings, sometimes frequently; using middle names or nicknames instead of forenames; "forgetting" their true ages, either making them younger or older, depending on the need; etc. But then the countries have to get involved with the game: changing county names or boundaries; changing town names (Toronto was once known as York); and using abbreviations for US states. In case you run across a strange place name, here's the US Post Office site. It explains among other things, state abbreviations and street suffixes. I had no idea there were so many creative names for street, road and drive. http://www.usps(.)com/ncsc/lookups/usps_abbreviations.html (remove brackets) Hope this helps, from Lisa in CA, originally from Toronto (aka York), who has Eng and Ire ancestors and who's found the most out about the ones from Sussex/Surrey but then borders were changing there too, and who would like to find out about James (aka Joseph) and Annie (aka Sarah) who was born in Toronto, but family said Cork, Ire.....
