Max and Bill Thanks for that. I've just had a look at that website and found it very informative. I may well have a look at the Poor Law records on my visit to the archives as one of my ancestors lists his occupation on the 1851 census as Pauper Shepherd. Cheers! Jeanette

Hi Jeanette Very, very briefly, Poor Law records record who was provided with funding/housing under the "Poor Law", which was chargeable to the Parish Funds. More complex than that, so follow Max's advice Badger Bill

Thanks Barbara and Max Some of those could be really useful. I shall certaily make the effort to ask. I know this sounds a bit dim but what are Poor Law records? Jeanette

Hi Jeanette the best bet is to ask. My library has a wealth of research material and they have produced a booklet that tells you what is available - thats a resource in its self! They have the directories like gores, and of course electoral registers for the district, all the area census plus some from other areas, and bmd records. Thats the tip of the iceberg I reckon I have years worth of stuff in there to keep me busy lol

Apart from searching the parish registers at my local archives, what other interesting documents and information can I find lurking on dusty shelves there? Jeanette
